Is someone with schizophrenia dangerous?
Yes and no.
Most people who commit violent acts are NOT schizophrenic.
Schizophrenics have a modestly elevated risk of violence, but much less than is popularly believed.
substance abuse is a much greater risk factor for violence, so if present should be treated aggressively.
Relative violence risk:
- substance abuse + schizophrenia > substance abuse >> schizophrenia > general population.
Reducing general risk factors for violence, especially access to firearms, is always a prudent first step for any family.
