Mood Disorder: Definition

A mood disorder is a

- medical illness that manifests itself as extremely depressed or elevated mood;

- disruption of the major appetites for:

- food;

- sex;

- sleep;

- new experiences;

- social interaction;

- life itself (suicidal ideation).

Common examples of mood disorders:

Depressive disorders:

- major depression;

- dysthymia.

Bipolar disorder:

- type I = major depression + mania;

- type II = major depression + hypomania;

- cyclothymia

Other variants:

- adjustment disorder, posttraumatic stress disorder.
