Robert Frost Born nine years after the Civil War in San Francisco. His father was alcoholic, originally from New England Puritan roots. His father wanted to move as far away from his family as he could. His father's ancestors landed with the Mayflower. His grandfather was a mill foreman and very strict. Following his father's death from tuberculosis, Frost had to move east with his mother and spend some time living with his grandfather. It took Frost decades to get his poems published. He was often very poor. One of his children died at age 4. He lived in England for a time, returning in 1914 because of the outbreak of World War I. One of his sons committed suicide. He won the Pulitzer Prize for poetry three times. He read at the inauguration of John F. Kennedy.
